  • Our troops overseas: Service adds up for Private Justin

Messenger News deputy editor Kara Phillips spent a week in the Solomon Islands with our Australian Army Reservists. She found ordinary people doing some extraordinary things:

TRENT Justin can usually be found crunching numbers as a accountant for Unley consulting and accounting firm MHM.

But just over three months ago he swapped the suit and tie for Army fatigues and his desk for the tropical jungles of the Solomon Islands with the Australian Army Reserves.

``It's great to be here helping people and to experience something totally different,'' the 25-year-old says.

``I've finally learnt how to open a coconut and it's been great to give back to this community.'' Private Justin is part of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), a partnership between the

Solomons and 15 countries in the Pacific region working to restore peace. Ethnic tension between 1999 and 2003 crippled the country and its population of
about 500,000 nestled over more than 900 tropical, mountainous islands.

Extortion and corruption were rife, while the government and delivery of basic services had collapsed. Since its introduction in 2003, RAMSI troops have been
supporting the local police force to restore law and order to the country.

Riots in 2006 and a tsunami in 2007 have made restoration of peace slow, but more than $1 billion in AusAID and RAMSI's on-the-ground presence is helping the people to rebuild.

The Unley resident is missing his wife, Jessica. ``But to get out and see some of the world, to patrol with the local police and to meet the ... people has been amazing.''
